Federal Government Reopens 47 Unity Schools After Strengthening Security Measures Nationwide

18th December, 2025.

The Federal Government has officially restored academic activities in all 47 Federal Unity Colleges previously shut down following security concerns that rocked several parts of the country.

Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, disclosed this development in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Boriowo, the reopening followed comprehensive enhancement of security infrastructure both within the school premises and surrounding environments of the affected institutions.

“Academic activities have fully resumed after the strengthening of security architecture within and around the affected schools. Students have returned safely to their campuses, with many currently concluding their December academic programmes, while others have successfully completed their examinations,” she stated.

The ministry emphasized that protecting students remains the administration’s foremost priority, noting that collaborative efforts with security agencies continue to ensure sustained stability in educational environments nationwide.

“The Federal Government remains resolute in its responsibility to protect every Nigerian child and to uphold their fundamental right to education in a safe and secure environment,” Boriowo added.

She further noted that the current administration places strong emphasis on human capital development and recognizes education as a critical pillar for national growth and development.

The successful return of students and smooth conduct of examinations across several Unity Colleges underscore the government’s determination to maintain uninterrupted learning despite existing challenges.

The ministry expressed appreciation to parents, school administrators and students for their patience, cooperation and support throughout the closure period, while reiterating commitment to sustaining a secure and stable education system.

It would be recalled that the Federal Government had ordered the immediate closure of the 47 Federal Unity Colleges following a series of security breaches, including mass abductions of schoolchildren in Kebbi and Niger states, prompting the precautionary shutdown to safeguard students in vulnerable locations.
