A team of human rights lawyers under the leadership of Barrister Marshal D F Abubakar has successfully obtained bail for Samuel Ojeogwu, widely known as Sammy West, who is the brother of popular Nollywood actress Regina Daniels.
The bail approval was announced on Monday by Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate and prominent human rights activist. Sowore disclosed that the legal team had achieved a significant breakthrough in securing Ojeogwu’s release, although the bail perfection process is still ongoing.
In his statement, Sowore alleged that Ojeogwu’s detention was orchestrated by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force under the influence of political actors. He criticized the handling of the case and expressed relief at the legal victory secured by the human rights legal team.
The controversy surrounding Ojeogwu’s arrest began when the Federal Capital Territory Police Command arraigned him before an Abuja court on multiple charges. These charges included criminal conspiracy, trespass, assault, criminal intimidation, and theft.
SP Josephine Adeh, the Public Relations Officer of the FCT Police Command, confirmed the development in an official statement released last Friday. According to her, the charges stemmed from a petition received by the FCT Metro Area Command on October 28, 2025, which named Ojeogwu and three other individuals as suspects in various criminal activities.
The police spokesperson explained that Ojeogwu’s arrest became necessary after he repeatedly ignored official invitations extended to him for questioning. Adeh stated that the suspect failed to honour several summons, prompting law enforcement officers to obtain a valid arrest warrant from a competent court.
Acting on the warrant, police operatives arrested Ojeogwu in Lagos State and subsequently transported him to Abuja for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Following the completion of investigations, Ojeogwu was formally arraigned before a magistrate court on November 6, 2025. The court ordered his remand at the Keffi Correctional Centre in Nasarawa State pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.
Adeh emphasized the FCT Police Command’s dedication to maintaining professional standards, adhering to due process, and upholding the rule of law throughout the handling of the case.
The arrest sparked intense public reactions, particularly after Regina Daniels accused her estranged husband, Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, of being behind her brother’s detention. The actress, in emotional social media posts, suggested that the arrest was connected to ongoing tensions in her marriage.
Family sources revealed that Regina’s parents, including her mother Rita Daniels and estranged father Jude Ojeogwu, traveled to Abuja to intervene in the matter. The actress had also hinted at the possibility of reconciling with Senator Nwoko if it would guarantee her brother’s freedom.
The case has attracted widespread attention from entertainers and the general public, with several Nollywood personalities calling for an amicable resolution to the family crisis.
With bail now secured, Ojeogwu is expected to be released from custody once all legal requirements are completed.
